There is much research to support the value of reading to infants / toddlers. One of the most important "tasks" of infants / toddlers is to make sense of the world around them. Therefore, the books they "read" should be full of "realistic" pictures . . . either photos or "lifelike" artwork. Infants / toddlers are not ready to appreciate "little blue bunnies dressed in funny clothes". They love to look at real faces, real animals and real activities. Infants often have a delightful sense of humor which usually awakens in about the eighth month. They love Sandra Boynton's "oops" (found in "Blue Hat, Green Hat" below) and begin to see what is funny about putting a coat on one's nose. They are intrigued by William Wegman's "Puppies" and think the one up in the air is "so silly".
Newborns will treat their books with respect (because they cannot do anything else). Older babies will chew the corners. (Nearly all of the books shown below are "BOARD BOOKS" ... meaning they are sturdy.) It often helps to remind them that |
